Recap: Oscars 2015!
The Oscars 2015 came and went last night. I feels like this year is zooming by. Although, I didn’t manage to get to catch up with a lot of Oscar nominees (not just Best Picture), I was looking back at my past two years and realized this year, the whole having a week of watching Oscar nominees, was effective because I actually watched 10 movies that were nominated in various categories. I beat my own personal record so thats something. I’m guessing, next year, I’ll try to schedule Oscars earlier, except how? The Valentine’s marathon clashes with it a little. Anyways, I have a year to figure it out.
We celebrated Chinese New Year dinner while watching Oscars this year, so that was a pretty nice addition because for once, I’m not sitting there by myself with a cup of tea in a lonely dining room. I actually had my…

DISNEY FILMS
I think for many people (including me) Disney movies are part of our upbringing as children. Maybe that’s why people still watch them when they’re adults, because they allow you feel nostalgic and remember when you were young. They’re pure escapism!

Logophile
I’m a total logophile. I love words, I really do, but often the most interesting ones are left out of everyday conversation. We should change that! I’m vowing to learn at least one new word every day, and I’m trying to sneak them into conversations with other people (even if people think I’m kind of a nerd for saying them!)
Anyway here’s a list of some of my favourite new words I’ve learned recently. Some of them are quite beautiful, don’t you think?
Vernorexia
n) A romantic mood inspired by spring.
Meliorism
n) The belief that the world tends to get better through human effort.
Halcyon
adj) To describe a time that was peaceful, idyllic, happy.
Serendipity
n) The occurrence of fortunate events or discoveries by accident.
Viridescent
adj) Basically a cooler way of saying green!
Dendropneuma
n) The spirits of trees.
Abyssopelagic
adj) Referring to the deepest depths of the ocean.
Chimerical
adj) Something highly improbable, as if created by a very fanciful imagination.
Anaxiphilia
n) The act of falling in love with the wrong person.
Pulchritudinous
adj) To be very physically attractive or appealing.
Jocularity
n) Joking speech or behaviour.
Mellifluous
adj) Smooth and sweet.
Transmogrify
v) To change into a different shape or form.
Ebullient
adj) Being cheerful and full of energy.
Petrichor
n) The pleasant smell of rain after a long period of warm, dry weather.
Balter

Oscars 2015: Predicting the Major Awards
So the Oscars are this week and I bet you’re pretty excited about it. If you’re like me, you’re banking on disappointment on the winners because that seems to be the way things go these years. Anyway, without being too bitter, here’s a quick rundown of what I think will win in some of the major categories, as well as what I think should win.
Best Picture
American Sniper
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash
Who Will Win: Boyhood. It seems like the two front-runners for the top prize are Boyhood and Birdman, both of which I was underwhelmed with, which seems to be happening more and more often. The more love Boyhood gets, the less I like it, but that’s just me.
Who Should Win: I’ve only seen 4 of the…

Go Down the Rabbit Hole: A Writer’s Manifesto
1. You are the work. The work is you: both an articulation of the self and a possibility for self-reflection. Be honest in creation: allow yourself to bleed into the work, but also allow it to work on you. Your work can show you things: illuminate and clarify your own thoughts, motivations, actions. If you do it right, you will find the work changing you, too.
2. Thinking is process. Laying on the floor. Sitting on park benches. Getting lost on purpose. These are all working. Learn the difference between mindless distraction and mindful wandering.
3. Go down the rabbit hole. Sometimes the work isn’t about what you think it is. Allow yourself to get lost down alleyways, to follow a train of thought around a corner. Don’t feel you need to reign yourself in. Too much focus squeezes all the possibility for revelation out of the work.
4. Fear…

Words of Habit
I tend to use “interesting” and “obviously” a lot. Thank God for the thesaurus!
I’ve thought about that often since. I mean, about the word nice. Perhaps I mean good. Of course, they mean nothing, when you start to think about them. A good man, one says; a good woman; a nice man, a nice woman. Only in talk, of course, these are not words to use in a novel. I’d be careful not to use them.
– The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing
A teacher recommended The Golden Notebook to me more than a decade ago. Written by Doris Lessing, The Golden Notebook centers around the life of a writer, Anna Wulf, who tries to make sense of the chaos of life by separating out her experiences into four distinct notebooks. It’s a book I’ve started more than once and despite not having finished it, this one quote has always stuck with me.
After reading Anna’s frustration with the words “good” and…
